Thanks Jamie Austen for these great pictures and report from a night session targetting rays on an Eastbourne beach this weekend:
'Well what a session that was. Fished Eastbourne beach for the first time chasing thornbacks last night and it turned out to be one of the best ray sessions I’ve had for a few different reasons.
I arrived around 11 with high tide being 3am, after taking a while to find exactly where I wanted to fish I had the first rod in the water around 12.
Within 10 minutes I landed my first thornback of the night weighing 3lb 3oz target achieved .
Around 20 minutes later I had another hard pull down and landed another thorny, this time a male weighing 5lb 1oz, which ended up being the biggest of the night.
The third ray I landed after a great scrap to my surprise was a beautiful PB small eyed at 9lb 4oz. WHAT A FISH.
After that it was a mixture of 2 more thornies at 2lb and 4lb 7oz and of course dog fish until I packed up at 4am.

Local Eastbourne angler Jay Carter caught three thornback rays from a local beach. The largest of the three, at 61cm, comes out at 11lb 4oz on the weight to measure chart. Nice one Jay!!
Jay reported:
'Good few hours had 3 all on bluey pulley pennal 3/0 with a 1/0 circle hook. The biggest - a double and new pb was on the head chunk new it was a good fish but the 7.5lb male was even harder to land didn't want to get off the bottom got to love the spring tides always chucks out a few good fish was surprised to see no one else fishing' Thanks Jay!
